FAQ

Q1: Is the DEV-501 Advanced Developer exam still available?
A: No. Salesforce stopped offering the Certified Force.com Advanced Developer credential, for which DEV 501 (Apex and Visualforce Controllers) was the recommended course, to new applicants effective September 14, 2015. Salesforce directed candidates to the Platform App Builder, Platform Developer I and Platform Developer II credentials instead.
Q2: What did the Advanced Developer certification consist of?
A: It had three parts that had to be completed in order: a proctored multiple-choice exam, a programming assignment using Apex and Visualforce, and a proctored essay exam about the submitted assignment. The credential was granted only after all three were passed.
Q3: How many questions were on the DEV-501 multiple-choice exam and how long was it?
A: The multiple-choice exam had 69 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions with 120 minutes allowed. The passing score was 73 percent, and no hard-copy or online materials could be used during the exam.
Q4: How much did the Advanced Developer exam cost?
A: The registration fee for the multiple-choice exam was US$400, and the retake fee was US$200.
Q5: What were the prerequisites for the Advanced Developer exam?
A: You had to hold a current Salesforce Certified Force.com Developer credential, and the programming assignment additionally required the Developer release (maintenance) exams to be up to date. Salesforce highly recommended the DEV 501 course but did not require it.
Q6: How was the Advanced Developer exam weighted?
A: The Winter '15 study guide weighted the multiple-choice exam as Development Lifecycle 13 percent, Force.com Code (Apex) 33 percent, Force.com Pages (Visualforce) 38 percent, and Testing and Debugging 16 percent.
Q7: How did the programming assignment and essay exam work?
A: The programming assignment was offered on a quarterly schedule, gave candidates one month to build the programmatic components of an application in a pre-configured Salesforce org, and Salesforce suggested planning at least 20 hours. The essay exam was three to five short-answer questions about that assignment, taken in 60 minutes under proctoring, with combined results emailed six to eight weeks after submission.
Q8: Where was the Advanced Developer exam delivered?
A: The multiple-choice and essay exams were proctored and could be taken onsite at a testing centre or in an online proctored environment. Multiple-choice results were shown on screen immediately and emailed.
